About the Author

This page is dedicated to some new products that are available on the market as well as some older medications. I try to pick some of the medications that I find to not only be a positive contribution to the veterinary world but those that are sometimes underutilized. While there is no perfect medication, there are some great ones; and some of these could be helping out more pets. Most of the common medications, such as antibiotics are not covered. This will be focused on medications that you might chose rather than just be prescribed. This is a new page so will be having many additions soon, I hope.

Below is a small summary of some products that are either new or sometimes overlooked that I feel are worth mentioning.

To the right is a small Amazon Store that includes products that I recommend. It can be hard to know which products to purchase and hopefully you will find this list helpful. If you chose to purchase a product, the transaction is done directly through Amazon like any other of their purchases with the exact same great prices. Hope it helps!

Great Products and Links
Atopica - Microemulsified Cyclosporine A
Use: Allergic Dermatitis

This medication is a safe medication used in the treatment of allergic dermatitis. Most pets that positively respond to steroid therapy (such as Temaril P, Depo Injections, Prednisone, Vetalog, etc..) will also respond to Atopica. Thus Atopica can be a great and often safer alternative to these steroids. To learn more, click to the right!

Ocluvet
Use: Cataracts, Nuclear Sclerosis

Ocluvet is a holistic eye drop that has been shown in two independent studies to actually reduce the opacity that is caused by cataracts and nuclear sclerosis. Once on a maintenance level, you only give the drop every other day. Furthermore, this might help prevent cataracts in such patients as diabetic patients or those on longer term corticosteroids.

Epakitin

Epakitin contains the active nutraceudical chilosan which is derived from the shells of crab and shrimp. Chilosan has the ability to bind phosphorus within the intestines and help prevent its absorption. In patients suffering from kidney disease, absorbed phosphorus will lead not only to the further degradation of the kidneys but also is a major contributor for the development of hyperparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism is common secondary disorder to kidney disease. Epakitin has been shown in studies to not only reduce blood phosphorus levels but also parathyroid hormone levels. Studies have also shown no increase in either ionized or total calcium levels with its use.

Use: Kidney disease
Pros: Safe, palatable and easy to administer, nutraceudical
Cons: Must be given with food. Currently only one distributor.

j/d Science Diet Prescription food

j/d is a all natural method to control inflammation and pain in dogs that suffer from arthritis or osteoarthritis. It has been shown to work in several studies and is a great alternative or addition to other pain medications. Many people want to control their dog's pain but do not want to use an NSAID (rimadyl, aspirin, etc...) for a variety of reasons. j/d might be a perfect choice. Click to the right for more information.

Use: Arthritis and Osteoarthritis
Pros: Safe, palatable, nutraceudical and NO artificial preservatives at all!
Cons: While it is cheaper if you combine most dog food costs and prescription pain medications costs, it is fairly expensive when compared to other foods. It should not be used in overweight dogs.

Rubenal

Rubenal is a nutraceutical supplement that has been shown to reduce inflammation and scarring of kidneys. For any dog or cat that has kidney insufficiency or failure, regardless of underlying cause, will have progressive inflammation and scarring. This supplement has also been shown to reduce urine protein levels and improve quality and quantity of life in pets with kidney disease.

Use: Kidney Disease
Pros: Highly palatable for both dogs and cats! Easy to administer. Nutraceutical. No side effects documented.
Cons: While present in Chinese herbal therapy for decades, it is new to traditional veterinary medicine. Currently available from one company.

Through its use at the early signs of parvo or when parvo exposure is suspected, Tamiflu can help minimize the effects of the parvo virus on the dog. It can help promote survival from this deadly puppy disease.

Pros: Can help promote survival and minimize clinical signs
Cons: Oral medication, off-label, must get at a human pharmacy.
